The other face of the Avant-Garde, Fundación MAPFRE. The most transgressive artists of the German avant-garde set no limits on their curiosity, on anything that could break with the academy and a rule-bound society.
One of the richest sources of inspiration was a book that is now legendary, Artistry of the Mentally Ill (1922). This book is the fruit of the research of art historian and psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn. Searching for patterns and answers, he analyzed hundreds of artworks made by psychiatric patients admitted to the Heidelberg University Clinic.
His book was eagerly devoured by Dadaist and Expressionist artists, and later by Surrealists. Klee, Kirchner, Nolde, Schmidt-Rottluff, Grosz… the list of authors inspired by this free, uninhibited, boundless art, a reflection of an unknown psychology, connects to Dubuffet and the so-called Art Brut movement after the Second World War.
Thanks to the Fundación MAPFRE, we finally have the chance to see an exhibition centered on Prinzhorn’s essential study of the so-called “art of the insane“.
