Robert Rauschenberg Foundation
The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and the Smithsonian museum network in D.C. and N.Y. have been forced to close to the public as a result of the partial shutdown of the federal #government. These museums will remain shuttered until funding #legislation is passed by #Congress and signed by President Trump or until some other source of money aside from the federal government is found to operate the institutions. In solidarity with colleagues who work tirelessly at these national institutions and in support of artists who have worked their whole life for the opportunity to show at these landmark museums, we share a video tour of #Rauschenberg’s ‘Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange (ROCI)’ exhibition, which was held in 1991 at the National Gallery of Art. In the exhibition catalogue’s foreword, the NGA’s Director at the time J. Carter Brown wrote: “Through our Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange Collection at the National Gallery of Art we will perpetuate many of the artist’s deeply held convictions and messages concerning international understanding, #peace, communication, and contemporary art. During turbulent times I hope we can find solace and inspiration in Robert Rauschenberg’s infectious commitment to artistic expression and reconciliation. These should matter deeply to our world.” Video: CBS Saturday Morning Interview, 1991 Music: Ben Seretan
