The turbulent 19th century produced tensions in the art world, especially between the younger generations and the academy. While some movements looked to the present, others turned nostalgically to a past predating the rigidities of the art world, the most popular being Pre-Raphaelitism: a group of young British artists wanted to explore a more genuine and pure way of painting, one that predated Raphael, the beloved prince of the arts.
While its founders are extremely well known (Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones, J. Everett Millais…), art history has forgotten its female members, with almost only the photographer Julia Margaret Cameron having entered the canon.
The exhibition “Women Artists: Pathways through Pre-Raphaelitism (1850-1914)” at Fundación MAPFRE presents around forty female artists linked to this movement. A unique opportunity to discover an iconic period of British art, one that went beyond painting to permeate other traditional artistic techniques such as textiles and stained glass.
