Ashurbanipal, the last great ruler of the Assyrian Empire, comes to Madrid courtesy of the British Museum. In the exhibition “I am Ashurbanipal, King of the World, King of Assyria” at Caixaforum, dozens of original pieces bring us closer to the legendary lion-hunting king.

We know of his fearsome military exploits through the wall decorations of his palace at Nineveh -the mythical place mentioned in the Bible-: visitors were overwhelmed by the depiction of the king’s endless achievements lining their path to the throne. One thing truly unique about Ashurbanipal’s reign is the preservation of thousands of clay tablets — some even bearing his own personal writings — which allow us to unravel the mysteries of that relentless civilization.

Caixaforum has been able to bring together famous bas-reliefs depicting the most characteristic scenes of his reign (bloody battles, the mythical lion hunt, and pleasurable scenes in the gardens), along with personal belongings of the monarch and objects from his era.
